Bishop’s Notes: November 2025

With Thanksgiving coming up, I’ve been reflecting on what I am thankful for this year.

Bishop Kristen Papson

In the past two months, I have heard from faithful pastors and Authorized Lay Worship Leaders who serve churches throughout our synod in dynamic and creative ways. I’ve worshipped with and engaged in conversation a few conferences about how we see the church doing ministry now and into the future. I’ve talked with a few individuals about their sense of call and the possibility of beginning the candidacy process for TEEM. I’ve worshipped with several congregations and spent time with bishop colleagues as I learn what ministry looks like in this new role. Many, many hands put together a beautiful and meaningful installation service where we celebrated and gave thanks to God (and where I may have shed more than just a few tears in gratitude for this calling).

Also, this season, I give thanks for the support I have received. Congregations and individuals have prayed for me and over me; I have a faithful and compassionate staff in Rev. Jones, Ellen, and Ann; I have been welcomed widely by congregations, conferences, and individuals as we have worked together to discern next steps and what ministry in NWPA looks like, and I have appreciated the patience and kindness of everyone as I learn more and grow into this role.

Thank you, thank you for accompanying me on this journey and for sharing your gifts with our synod. You all truly make a difference in this ministry!

Bishop Papson’s Installation

Thank you for joining me as I was installed as bishop of the NWPA Synod. I appreciate all of the hard work and the gifts of those in our synod who made this day beautiful. Thank you for your continued prayers as we join together to see how God is at work in our corner of the ELCA.
